Eggies’ Trip

Mindmap

Our word cloud includes egg, light, star, fly and cake. Although, they don’t seem like to have any link with each other, after our brainstorming, we found very cute and fancy relationships that can link them together to make our story. At the point we want to link light and star together, we come up with the topic of light pollution in the city. Nowadays, because of intense light on the street and in buildings, we can hardly see starry nights as the shinning of light in the city weakens the light of stars.
I did some research on light pollution and found that many news report and the government have already aware residents about the negative effects of light pollution. This not only harms us, but also bring negative effects to the natural environment and wildlife, affecting their regular life. We finally decided to expand this topic and make an animation based on it to aware people about the severeness of light pollution.

Zoom out of background (final)

I drew many background for this zoom out and finally chose the ones that can show a big zoom-out of a city. The important point I realised when drawing and editing is that showing more areas of the island and the road are more important than showing the sky around the island. Showing gradually zoomed out island will bring a more exaggerated jump from the ground to the sky.

Reflection

For teamwork, I think our group members collaborated efficiently. Time management is one of the most important parts of teamwork, so we gave each work part a deadline to guarantee we would have enough time for working. We also had a clear division of roles, so we took responsibility for our own parts and usually showed each other progress when we met at school. During Christmas, because of the work division, we could still work on our parts efficiently. After Christmas, we almost finished the animation and had plenty of time to edit and improve. The method we can apply the next time is to set up an online drive for showing progress without delay. By doing so, we can communicate more and better collaborate during weekends and vacations.

I mainly took responsibility for 3D background design and modeling, 2D background drawing, editing, sound effects making, and some parts of character animation.  When doing the 3D model of the cake city on Maya, the most difficult part is to model the cake houses to approach the materials and softness of real cakes. To solve this problem, we found online teaching videos for modeling cake, such as how to model soft creams on doughnuts. Also, we adjusted the metalness and roughness of different materials according to their features and physical properties. For example, creams often reflect less light than chocolates, so we needed to tell the difference of materials in our model. Although there were many difficulties along the way, Rain and I collaborated well on the 3D background. However, there are still things we can improve. For example, elements that overlap each other penetrate and overlay in a wrong way, which will bring flaws to the background. For example, we failed to make the bottoms of the houses totally covered by undulating snow on the ground. All the detailed problems should be checked for times each time we are working on a project.

As we animated the characters’ movements in 2D with 3D background, we met many problems when integrating them together harmoniously. After each time of talking with tutors, we would make some improvements such as adding shadows to the 2D layers, making them fit better into a 3D background. The zoom-out part when the characters are flying to the sky was the most struggling part for me. I did many different versions of drawings to find the most suitable ones for this huge zoom-out. At first, the zoom-out animation was unsmooth and integrated at a wrong pace. I tried many times of editing and finally learned how to use Ae to do the eased zoom-out and cut with Jess, which is somehow difficult for me as I spent a lot of time adjusting the graph of ease. But the zoom-out animation finally turns out well and follows the right pace, creating a fancy effect of an exaggerated jump from the land to the sky.

Our theme for this animation is light pollution. We came up with this topic when we were brainstorming from our word cloud. We linked lights and stars together to express our concept, transforming the lights into the stars in the sky as an unexpected ending. As light pollution is caused by strong exposure of lights in the city and leads to the loss of stars in the night sky, this transformation between lights and stars is the most important plot in our story. To tell the story in a direct but more interesting way, we designed a cake city and our egg characters to showcase the concept of light pollution.

From my overall experience, one of the things that benefit our project most is we discussed with tutors a lot and refined our animation again and again as we finished the first version of the animation early. Each time we showed tutors our animation, they would suggest new things we can improve, such as adding shadows to 2D layers, adding a blur fading between two scenes, using Ae to speed up and ease the zoom out of the environment, and so on. However, the eggs suddenly turn into shining stars confused some audiences when we showed our classmates after finishing the whole project. They thought we should design better bonds between the eggs and stars. Therefore, always keep talking and asking for ideas from others as they may bring some new perspectives for improvements. This project taught me a lot not only about the personal improvement of animation skills but also about how to collaborate with team members in a long-run project and always reflect on ourselves with others’ suggestions.

3D Worlds

Presentation of my 3D world

The interesting part of this project is to tell a story in three frames of modeling. My narrative is about one character riding on a hot air balloon to celebrate another character’s birthday. So, I gradually zoomed in to show different scenes and use characters in the foreground, middle and background to tell the story. I like the concept as each frame shows something unexpected and tells the story gradually.

When I was drawing the sketch, I did both front and bird view of the initial sketch to have an overall understanding of the environment in 3D. This helped me when I’m modeling on Maya. I used the skills I learned in class such as how to change the shape of an object by adjusting the vertex or extruding the shape inward and outward to do my final work. Also, I applied different materials and textures on the objects to make them in the condition that can express their properties most. For example, I adjust the metalness and roughness to make it reflect light like balloons. At first, although I adjust the property of the balloon, it couldn’t reflect the light as in the reality. I finally overcame the problem by adding an area light from a different perspective and with different exposure. This is what I find useful for 3D modeling as a proper light source can help us to make different objects disrobe their materials and reflect the light as they are in real condition. The material and style of the model made my whole environment and characters match each other, showing they are from a specific fantasy world.

Overall, the problem I have now is I cannot control the Maya to make the exact shapes and appearance in my mind. Most of the time, I can only adjust the shape to reach a certain standard but still way too far. To improve my skills, I want to study from the online resources that teachers provided us and practice more to better model different objects. After looking at peers’ works, I found out that modeling realistic objects such as architecture and vehicles is a way to practice skills in modeling difficult 3D environments. Although two weeks are already passed by, I will do more 3D work on Maya in the future.

Frog & Mushrooms

Moodboard

I decided to show the emotion of “excitement”. So, when I was brainstorming, I thought about bright colours, dancing frogs and jumping plants. In this case, I mixed the ideas and tell a story of a frog’s hallucination after eating poisonous mushrooms.

Idea & Character Design

Key Frames

In this rotation, the most meaningful thing for me is that I learned how to use Ae and Ps to produce animation. For the study of using Ae to create a bouncing ball, I surprisingly found out that we even need to apply the first/second derivative in math and knowledge in physics, which makes me clearer that all the subjects are connected somehow.

To talk about the concept of the story, the most difficult part is to fit my storyline and characters into the soundscape assigned. Initially, I decided to show the emotion of “excitement” by telling a story of a frog’s hallucination after eating poisonous mushrooms. I linked how the music is abruptly stopped with how the frog is suddenly back to reality, spitting out the poisonous mushroom. This also brings the ending as a surprise. What I can improve is adding more movements to the background. For example, I can also animate the mushrooms swaying. This can help the animation to communicate its concepts better.

For my final work of 2D motion graphics, I used Ae, Ps, and Pro-create together to make the animation. In pro-create, I drew the characters and background. I did the blooming of star shapes in Ae. Mainly, I adjusted the position, rotation, and scale of the shapes on the timeline and repeated them to create the illusion of blooming. The part I can improve is learning more about how to use the polygon tool in Ae. In Photoshop, I composed all the frames together on the video timeline. However, I didn’t draw all the frames on Ps as I’m not familiar with using this software and Wacom. This is the part I need to improve in further study.

Overall, I also tried to use the 12 animation principles in this project. For example, I applied Squash and Stretch to the frog when they are jumping and to the mushrooms when they are landing on the ground. What I can improve is applying Ease in and Out. Viewing my animation, I think the timing in each frame is almost the same. However, Ease in and Out can help me to better pace the film.

Heavy ball
Light ball

This was my first time to use Ae to make animation. I felt the difference when adding gravity to different kinds of tings, such as the heavy and light ball. With only imagination, it is hard to me to think about how they might land and jump on the ground. In this case, it is better to try how the balls will fall in the real circumstances. This can apply to many other situation. For example, when I don’t know how characters react to certain things, I can act in front of a mirror and get inspired by the reactions.

Jumping

The hair of the girl should be lighter and move less than I draw in this animation. In my animation, the hair seems like to be alive as they jump up themselves. What I learned is that I should always keep the volume of objects the same while they are moving.

Rear Window

small stop-motion

I think the most effective part is how audiences can see the stop-motion through the protagonist’s telescope. It’s like a film, quickly rolling to show what he sees around him. Also, we showed the murder at the end clearly, which is an important plot in this movie. What we can improve is to draw the visions in the telescope in better details. As the fast rolling speed, it delivered a vague story that viewers might not understand the messages.

Triangle, circle and square

I like how we give the black dots with gravity as it heavily falls down to the ground and moved other dots to jump. Stop motion is somehow difficult for me as I cannot really imagine the changing of things while animating. But the sense of unknown is also interesting for me.
